Anyone who’s interested in DSLR video has probably heard of Philip Bloom, the UK based director, DP and filmmaker who is one of the world’s foremost authorities on getting the best out of DSLRs.  The man shot part of Red Tails, for Pete’s sake (who the hell is Pete anyway?).  What you might not know is two bits of news. So, because we love you video geeks, here they are:

Fistly he’s touring Oz with Ric Creaser, aussie audio genius, to deliver a series of DSLR and large chip camcorder workshops courtesy of RØDE.  If you get a chance to get to these (sorry, Sydney and Melbourne are sold out) then I’d suggest you do.  I’ll be at the Byron Bay workshop and am practically panting for it.  Ask the people staring uncomfortably at me in the cafe.

The other bit of news is that Philip recently launched a forum that covers the entire digital filmmaking spectrum.  I’m a member on a number of such forums and, within a week, this one has already surpassed the others in terms of content, activity and general grownupedness of everyone there.  Get along and register, and help push him over 1,000 members in the first week.  It’s real names only though, so leave the 5Dlegend96 pseudonym at the door.  See you there.

DSLR Special

Episode 10 of the DerpCast went up recently over at The Brotherhood of Geek.  This fortnight it’s all about DSLRs.

iTunes for the iPeeps, and RSS links etc on the TBOGeek site. Enjoy.

This was a fun one to make. Good points: learned a lot about After Effects. Bad: still cringing at the wobbly camera and focus. You hear it so often but it’s true: you can’t fix it in post. Get it right when you originate.

Personally I think the matching of “Mr Fancy Pants” with cosplay is long overdue if it hasn’t already been done.  There are a lot of fun edit decisions I made on this one, though I’m not sure anyone will notice most of them. Sigh – oh well.  Hope you like, and if you giggle a bit then my work is done.

iPad love this way...

We just posted episode 9 of the DerpCast over at The Brotherhood of Geek.  We cover a lot of ground, but the iPad 2 is a common thread.  I love that thing.

Check us out on the site and on iTunes!

free, high quality, fun

Back in May 2011 I was playing a bit of League of Legends, which is a hyper-competitive online battle/strategy game.  I had written a song called “Everyone Gets Nerfed”, a parody of R.E.M.s “Everybody Hurts”, some time before that for World of Warcraft, and was inspired to adapt the lyrics to League.

The song was released on the Brotherhood of Geek Podcast site, which I co-host with my brothers.  It was a hit.  After being featured on Riot Games’ Summoner Showcase, we served over 60,000 downloads of the free track in two days. A bootleg video by another user on YouTube served another 50,000 hits.  Not bad for my first track, happy with that!

the upcoming album

The next League song is in the works, and I’m going to manage the release a little tighter this time with an official YouTube video on the blackhueymedia channel.

Check out Nikasaur from Riot Games pimping the song (under my League nick, “Suddenly Derp”), download it for yourself at The Brotherhood of Geek site and keep an eye out for the album…
